#10 about Labubus

Quoting my husband, I'm taking this one Labubu at a time.

Shout out to fellow creative Zoey, who gave me the pep talk I needed on Friday 🫶

Maybe you're wondering what I'm doing in your inbox on a random Tuesday night. Well, wonder no more because I have something very important to talk about.

This week, somebody put a Labubu on the tomb of Karl Marx (although it might be a Lafufu -- or fake Labubu).

As mentioned in one of the comments on the Instagram post where I learned about it, none of these words are in the Bible! We're living in unprecedented times. It's very Labubu. I also learned that people apparently have to pay 6 pounds to visit Marx's tomb??? Not very Labubu, in my opinion.

I'm living for this level of irony, and it made me laugh for hours during the weekend.

Since Labubus are everywhere, it came up in a conversation today, and thanks to a younger and definitely cooler work friend, I got introduced to the world of not only the Labubu but also the Crybaby and the Molly, and some other IP properties that Popmart is not exploiting #Capitalism.

Labubus have made people go wild for them. There are videos of women crying because they didn't get the Labubu they wanted, demand for Labubus has crashed websites, people have fought over them, and they're just one more thing we want to overconsume... until the next best thing comes along.

So, as always, we can't just be normal about it.

We can't say, oh, I'll get one and that will be good. No, WE HAVE TO HAVE THEM ALL. And it's not only because that's our nature, it's because overconsumption is in the design of these things, and we'll just fall for it over and over again.

The future looks very Labubu from here, and it seems like we can't do anything about it.

enjoyed and enjoying

✷ I went to a concert, and this person almost left his flowers on the floor. Luckily, they came back to pick them up. I found it extremely endearing.

✷ Read Never Let Me Go again, and it broke my heart again. This time in a different way. Kazuo Ishiguro did it! I remembered more or less what it was about, and yet, it surprised me once more. Ishiguro has such a beautiful way of writing about longing, nostalgia, sadness, and just human nature. It's always a sad and beautiful experience.

✷ una recomendación: No todo el mundo de Marta Jiménez. si escribiera algo, sería algo como esto (excepto el cuento de la Asian teen que me pareció innecesario y problemático y yo jamás escribiría algo problemático).

✷ I watched the extended version of Midsommar, and I was thinking that I was going crazy because for years I had talked about it and said "and it all happens during the day, can you imagine???" but turns out this time I watched the extended version, so I'm not going crazy, allegedly. Also, Christian is now an even shittier partner than in the first version I watched, which I knew, but I'm glad I have proof now.

✷ la última vez que escribí aquí, dije que estaba obsesionada con el nuevo disco de Ainda y todavía me dura la obesión. the meme still stands:
