#4 about Timothée Chalamet

this benefits me in ways you can't imagine

Last Sunday (October 27) I spent the whole evening reading and LAUGHING at tweets about the Timothée Chalamet look-alike competition.

If that doesn't ring a bell, congratulations, you're one of the pure human beings who can live without knowing that. And if you know it or want to know about it, stick with me.

So, basically, a few weeks ago (or days? Maybe it's days but it feels like weeks in Internet time), some signs appeared in New York announcing a Timothée Chalamet look-alike competition. The prize: $50 USD. No real incentive to participate, actually.

That went viral and fast-forward to October 27, a bunch of people and Timothées were gathered for the contest. The AP made a live stream, other sites too!

There were Timothées in different versions, Bob Dylan Timothée, Willy Wonka Timothée, Pug Timothée. And it was fun and there was a 2-meter tall trophy for the winner and one Timothée was taken by the police for some reason AND the REAL Timothée even showed up and he didn't look at all like Timothée Chalamet.

And just wow.

This is EXACTLY the type of thing I LOVE and sometimes miss. Just humans being nonsensical in an inoffensive way. Doing something funny for the sake of it. I LOVE IT.

Something I find a bit tragic here is that even when people are allowed to dress up and do fun things they simply don’t. Or at least, not in a way that seems fun (sorry!). For example, Carnival. It’s the only time of the year when people are encouraged to dress up and have fun and get drunk and party and instead, they just get drunk. They wear exactly the same costumes every year: onesies of different colors (plus classic racist costumes). There’s zero creativity, just costumes you get in the supermarket. Which, fair… I guess?

Now, I'm not saying that that's wrong but I find it kind of interesting. Why? Why even when you’re supposed to wear a fun costume for a day you wouldn’t? Is it because people don’t like to stand out? Should everyone be equally standing out and that's the reason they wear the same costumes? I need answers.

What I know is that sometimes I miss this type of craziness. You know, the craziness of having a Timothée Chalamet look-alike competition or the craziness of throwing Doctor Simi plushies at musicians in their concerts (related to that, I wrote something about México mágico here). I miss the idea of going out and possibly seeing something that will leave you thinking but whyyyyyy and then make you laugh.

I'd love for everyone to have the right to be completely ridiculous at least once a year.

More than once is unsustainable I think.

enjoyed and enjoying

✷ When you go to a bookstore and you see a pretty book, what do you do? You buy it, of course. So that's the new book in my reading list, Pride and Prejudice in this extremely beautiful edition.
